In 1843 Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon’s younger brother, elucidated the proteinaceous nature of snake venom. The venom is in fact modified saliva and is made up of various proteins with a number of grim properties. One common property is a blood coagulant like the one in a Russell’s viper bite.
