Anyone any thoughts on the authenticity of this article from the New York Times?

No idea on the polar bears, but I did read in ye olde polar histories that Amundsen originally wanted to reach the North Pole, and was annoyed that someone had already done it. That’s supposedly what spurred him to go South.
